Job Description

OVERVIEW : In support of the exhibition Following Space: Thaddeus Mosley and Alexander Calder , the Following Space In-Gallery Educator facilitates interpretive in-gallery experiences for visitors. Utilizing pre-established exhibition-specific educational materials and activities, the facilitator provides dynamic and hands-on ways for visitors of all ages to explore major themes and topics presented in the exhibition. This role will be responsible for setting up and resetting in-gallery activities, preparing and restocking materials, maintaining the activity cart, facilitating engaging art-focused activities and interacting with a diverse public.

REPORTS TO : Associate Director, Interpretation

COMPENSATION : $22.07 – $23.64 / hour

HOURS : Employment period for this role is November 11, 2024 to June 8, 2025. Required in-gallery work will occur during the run of the exhibition, with a typical schedule of Wednesday – Sunday, 10:00am – 5:00pm.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  1. Warmly welcome visitors to the exhibition and guide them through a facilitated educational experience 
  2. Adapt the content of offered activities to meet the needs and interests of visitor(s)
  3. Interact with multiple visitors or groups of visitors simultaneously 
  4. Share information about the Following Space exhibition with visitors 
  5. Share resources to enrich visitors’ time at SAM
  6. Replenish and restock activity materials and supplies as needed
  7. Set up and reset activity materials as needed
  8. Perform other duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

  1. Facilitation or teaching experience with diverse audiences is required
  2. Strong customer service/public engagement skills
  3. Adaptability and flexibility are required to deliver a high-quality educational experience for a range of visitor interests
  4. Excellent oral communication skills; able to communicate effectively with visitors
  5. Openness to ongoing training and feedback on the activity content and facilitation strategies from the Interpretation Department
  6. Ability to work independently and in a team setting; ability to self-motivate
  7. Ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
  8. Excellent time-management, problem-solving, and problem-prevention skills
  9. Ability to work accurately with close attention to detail
  10. Ability to work with co-workers, vendors, and volunteers professionally and tactfully
  11. Ability to adhere to Museum policies and to support management decisions in a positive, professional manner

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work areas are primarily inside, in a climate-controlled environment with light to moderate background noise.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED FOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Stationary Work : Approximately 80% of time is spent standing or sitting in the gallery area. Balance of time (approximately 20%) is spent moving around the work area. Occasional extended periods of standing may be required when assisting at Museum events.

Communication : Clear and effective verbal and written communication in English with volunteers, donors, members, the public, and co-workers is necessary.

Moving : The ability to move up to twenty pounds on occasion is necessary for moving equipment and supplies.

Office Work : Ability to effectively and regularly operate a computer, keyboard, and other office productivity machinery, such as copy machines and printers, and ability to inspect, prepare and use paperwork, files, equipment, and supplies is necessary.
