JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/objective
Medical Assistant, under the direct supervision of a Physician, Certified Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, and/or Registered Nurse (Qualified Healthcare Providers) provides delegated patient care activities and treatments in a customer-focused manner. Reports observations and patient care data to the Physician, Certified Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, and/or Registered Nurse.
Education/Experience Required
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Certificate of completion from accredited Medical Assistant Program
CPR Certification
Essential skills

Essential Function / Responsibilities
Below is a list of the essential functions of the job truly necessary or required to perform the job; other duties as assigned may be required.
Provide assistance to Qualified Healthcare Providers within their scope of practice.
Responsible for rooming patients and obtaining and recording vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure), weight and height and updating allergies and medications in Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
Appropriately places blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter on patient
Demonstrates effective handwashing
Chooses correct personal protective equipment (PPE) for patient care, donning and doffing
Follows medical waste policies, sharps disposal
Safely transports sedated patients to their vehicle
Demonstrates and observes cleaning agents and dry times for cleaning in all areas
Intravenous (IV) removal
Intramuscular (IM) injections
Performs urine drug screens (Clinic only)
Knowledge of how to appropriately destroy medications (Clinic only)
Knows location of crash cart location, how to unlock and roll it where asked
Demonstrates how to open patient chart and encounter
Demonstrates how to update patient medications, allergies, pharmacies, vital signs (procedures & consults such as OV's and new patients)
Able to send flags, e-faxing, and create phone notes, works excuses, prints discharge forms, and other handouts as needed.
Basic patient identification
Demonstrates proper use of printers, copiers, scanners, dymo labeler
Clinic day preparation
Patient consent forms for chart
Radiation awareness/education
Wears radiation badge in procedures
Wears lead during procedures
Reports rips/tears in shielding to radiology tech
Knows locations of emergency gas shut off valves
Locates Fire extinguishers, can communicate RACE/PASS
Understands and can locate emergency prep plan for facility
Knows location of eye wash stations
Participates in fire, disaster, and bomb threat drills.
Knows evacuation routes/locations/fire pull stations
Follows Infection Control policies and procedures.
Demonstrates the knowledge and expertise necessary to uphold standards of decontamination and sterilization of instrumentation and equipment and is responsible for cleaning and sterilizing instruments throughout the clinic day.
Responsible for cleaning exam rooms, pre-procedure, procedure and post- procedure areas throughout the clinic day and completing the end of day checklist.
Collects specimens for all necessary testing as directed by the provider.
Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients, family members, visitors, and members of the health care team.
Responsible for documents and forwarding patient medical concerns received by in person or by telephone message.
Assist physician with set up and during an interventional procedure in the clinic procedure room within their scope of practice
May be required to assist physician with set up and during an interventional procedure in the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) with in their scope of practice
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to program, maintain and troubleshoot complex equipment such as autoclaves and vitals.
Identifies areas for improvement and makes suggestions for innovative solutions.
Willingly cross-trains to other departments and performs other duties as needed.

Clinical environment where:
May be exposed to bloody/body fluids and infectious disease
May be exposed to communicable disease when interacting with patients
May be exposed to outside weather conditions during transport of patients if working on a mobile unit
May be exposed to radioactive isotopes and ionizing radiation
May be exposed to environmental hazards such as exposure to noise and travel
Physical demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is routinely required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
